Microsoft and Yahoo: Search Partners
After much time, the long awaited partnership between Microsoft and Yahoo is final. The revenue share partnership seems to be the a good deal for both companies - time will tell if it will make a difference for those who use search on the internet. If you have not had a chance to use the Bing Search Engine - you should try it out.

I particularly enjoy Kit Eatons take on the Microsoft-Yahoo Partnership. “After years of foreplay, Microsoft and Yahoo have made it official: They’re cosying up in bed together. The major beneficiary will be Bing–it’ll usurp Yahoo search, boosting its Google rivalry power.”

Microsoft launched the Beta version of it’s new search engine - Bing. Steve Ballmer officially revealed the the new search engine,during the D7 conference. In addition, Microsoft has unveiled their new Bing Community site (bing.com/community). Microsoft has high hopes that their community will “engage, educate and excite you”. Time will tell…

When your business depends on the efficiency of your server, the choice of a web host becomes a critical decision, one that takes on monstrous proportions if you make the wrong choice. While there are a variety of hosting options available – dedicated servers, colocation, managed and unmanaged services, shared hosting, virtual hosting and other – some are more expensive than the others and are thus not viable in the long run.

Colocation, where you place your server in a data center that provides you the best in terms of bandwidth, security, hardware and software services and physical infrastructure, is a costly option, and there are only some kinds of organizations that benefit from renting space at these facilities. They are:

• Companies that cannot afford to invest time, effort and money in building and equipping dedicated space for their servers; these server rooms must be protected against the elements of nature, man made accidental disasters, power outages and Internet backbone disconnects, data theft and tampering, and other threats. Rather than spend a fortune to house just one server or two, these companies choose colocation which is the more cost-effective option of the two.

• Enterprises that demand and use extremely high speeds to connect to the World Wide Web; rather than purchase T1 or similar lines at exorbitant costs, they would rather take advantage of the existing infrastructure at colocation centers where site access at high speeds is a matter of routine even during sudden traffic surges because of the large bandwidths provided.

• Organizations with sensitive and critical data that must be available online at all times to ensure that business is not affected; servers placed in the custody of colocation centers are safe from power outages and disconnection from the Internet because they are protected by redundant network structures and backup power sources to last through the ravages of a storm or other natural disaster, thus ensuring almost a 100 percent of server uptime.

• Organizations that do not have a strong IT team; these outfits can take advantage of the managed services offered by an experienced technical team at the colocation center and rest assured knowing that they do not have to worry about maintenance and troubleshooting issues related to their server.

• Companies that are in the telecommunication field; they benefit from the cross connections that colocation facilities offer and utilize it to exchange network data.

• Organizations that need regular offsite backup and disaster recovery measures; besides hosting your server, colocation centers offer additional services that include regular data backups to and disaster recovery methods when nature or manmade fury strikes.

It took a few years before Martine Rothblatt got used to describing her daughter’s chronic lung disease as a lucrative market opportunity. “I choked every time I said it - it sounded so immoral,” says Rothblatt, 52. But when she realized that the fastest track to a cure was to launch a biotech firm and then take it public, Rothblatt started United Therapeutics (unither.com).

That was in 1996, and today she is convinced that capitalism is the answer. “I no longer have any doubt about the benefit of using profit motivation to develop cures,” she says. “It’s the language I need to build the company,” she says. “It’s the language that Wall Street understands.”

Rothblatt had no background in biotech: She had started her career as a corporate lawyer and gone on to help launch three successful satellite-communication companies, including Sirius Satellite Radio (Charts). In 1995, Rothblatt sold some of her telecom stock and used the proceeds to fund nonprofit PPH research. But after spending $2 million over two years, she saw little progress and grew discouraged.

She started researching the disease herself and found more than just a potential treatment - she found a business opportunity. The National Institutes of Health estimates that more than 200,000 suffer from PPH worldwide. Each patient pays as much as $150,000 a year for treatment - a $7.5 billion market in the U.S. alone.

After selling her vision of an inhaled PPH therapy to angel investors, Rothblatt tracked down and recruited two scientists who had developed a promising PPH drug at Burroughs Wellcome before it merged with Glaxo in 1995. It took Rothblatt seven months to license the compound, which Glaxo had shelved in favor of Flolan. Rothblatt founded United Therapeutics in 1996 and took the company public three years later.

Reaching her goal of developing an inhaled drug would take years of clinical trials, and Rothblatt had to find a way to keep investors happy in the meantime. “Something I learned from my satellite companies - you have to develop iterations of your products over time, producing real revenues incrementally,” she says.

In 2002 the FDA approved the company’s first version of Remodulin, the compound she licensed from Glaxo. Remodulin, which patients inject under their skin, lasts as long as three hours in a patient’s bloodstream and doesn’t have to be cooled. The drug, say some pulmonologists, is easier and safer to administer than Flolan. Neither a spokesman for Glaxo nor one for the drug’s U.S. distributor would comment on the ease and safety of the use of Flolan.

When the iPhone ships June 29, it will be the first mobile device able to stream YouTube over Wi-Fi or EDGE networks, according to a press release.

To achieve higher video quality and longer battery life for mobile devices, YouTube has begun to encode its videos in the advanced H.264 format, and the iPhone will be the first to offer it. Over 10,000 videos will be ready by the phone’s release, with the full catalog available in the format by fall.

The iPhone will include a built-in Apple-designed YouTube application. Additionally, YouTube will also be available on Apple TV.
