Best Internship Ever

Joel Spolsky, co-founder and CEO of New York-based Fog Creek Software, has found a way to consistently hire the nation’s top talent at his firm — by focusing his recruiting efforts on rising stars still in college, instead of people already in the job market.

Spolsky auditions his potential employees during a paid summer internship program, wooing them with generous perks and pay. Nearly half of the developers at Fog Creek were hired as college interns and then recruited for full-time work. Here’s a look at Spolsky’s philosophy on “full-court-press recruitment.”

Spolsky puts potential intern candidates through a rigorous interview process. First, they are interviewed over the phone. If they pass the phone interview, Fog Creek flies them out to New York to be interviewed in person. When they arrive, a uniformed driver pulls up in a limousine and whisks them away.

Ideally, the candidates will be staying in the coolest hotel they’ve ever seen — in the heart of the city. After a long day of interviews, candidates are invited to stay in the hotel for two more nights at the company’s expense. Even though only one in three applicants who make it to this stage will be hired, there is no skimping on the perks.

The idea is that kids who don’t get the internship will return to campus thinking Fog Creek is a classy employer — and will spread the word.

Disabled Entrepreneurs Gaining Popularity

From speech impediments to deafness, a growing number of people with disabilities are shunning the corporate world and starting their own companies.

After a battle with sinus cancer, Dawn Hampton was wary of re-entering the workforce. The eye patch and dental prosthesis she was forced to wear — the disease claimed an eye, cheekbone, and several teeth — left her self-conscious about her appearance and speech.

“I thought no one would hire me because of what I look like,” Hampton says.

So she decided to become an entrepreneur.

Hampton, who had worked in hairdressing, retail, and construction prior to her diagnosis, used her first-hand knowledge of insurance claims to launch Ph.D. Organizational Services, a Santa Barbara, Calif.-based firm that processes reimbursements for patients and physicians.

Concerned about corporate hiring practices and the potential for career advancement, Americans with speech impediments, hearing impairments, and other disabilities are opting to go into business for themselves. Continue reading →

Serious Home Based Business Opportunity

Are you actively seeking out a legitimate home business opportunity? If so, you’re probably concerned about avoiding those options that are not on the “up and up”.

Here, we’ve compiled the top five signs of a legitimate home business opportunity to help you weed out the good from the bad.

#5: References are Readily Available

Any legitimate home business opportunity that you explore should be able to provide you with references from other franchisees or owners. Without such contacts, it would be quite difficult (if not impossible) for you to gauge what working with the business will be like.

Always ask for a list of at least five references; a legitimate home business opportunity won’t hesitate to comply. And make sure to follow-up with each person, asking pertinent questions about the organization and writing down each answer.

#4: Every Aspect of Ownership is Spelled Out

If you’re unclear about any aspect of the company, then you might not be working with a legitimate home business opportunity. Many shady operators work on the Internet, and they are quite adept at giving you only half the story.

A legitimate home business opportunity will spell out all the relevant data for you from the get-go. Consequently, you Continue reading →

Afghan Ringtones Challenge Entrepreneur

afgan ringtonsKeen to tap a fast-growing market, I underestimated the cultural obstacles to running my telecom startup.

When I finished my MBA last year with $20,000 in unused school loans, I realized I could tap that money to start my own business.

With a degree from the London Business School, I figured I could take my entrepreneurial talents anywhere in the world.

I chose Afghanistan.

It was even more of a challenge than I expected. The main difficulty wasn’t so much the security situation. More problematic was the fact that years of war and chaos have made Afghan businesspeople cautious about offending the mullahs and the government. I planned to sell ringtones and other mobile-phone content. To do that I had to get my customers - the country’s mobile-phone providers - to take a chance on services that the culture had yet to accept. Along the way I got quite an education.

My interest in the Middle East began in 2003, when I served a six-month tour of duty as a U.S. Marine Corps officer during the invasion of Iraq. In the aftermath I saw that development of the region’s private sector was almost nonexistent. I wanted to get involved.

I visited Afghanistan for the first time in 2005, when I interned at a new staffing agency during my summer break from business school. Back in London, I searched for a business in which I could draw on what I had learned about Afghan business culture. A friend suggested mobile-phone content. “Man, people would go bananas for this,” he said. I thought he was right. The country was just discovering cellphones. I put together a business plan.

DVD Rental Kiosks Make $500 Daily

An Original Video DVD rental unit can gross $500 a week and take only 20 minutes a day to run, says Mitchell Leszczyszak, an account manager at the company.

And although not strictly a franchise, this opportunity, which can be operated from home, offers many of the same benefits.

BOB: What distinguishes Original Video’s business package?

Mitchell: Original Video offers all of the benefits of a franchise without charging the franchise royalty fees usually associated with ongoing business support.

As an Original Video machine owner, our clients can expect assistance with every aspect of their business.

From start-up we will assist in finding a suitable location, help to arrange finance and provide a fully operational unit with complete installation.

We provide a start-up package that includes DVDs, marketing material and full system training, among other things.

As the system is fully automated, little training is required to be able to get the full repertoire of tools for operating the system.

Account support is also provided, and this encompasses ongoing business development. Account support works alongside the machine owners to assess the performance of their machines, assist in the day to day running, and suggest and submit marketing and PR material to a wide range of local and national publications to increase machine revenue and reach as many new customers as possible.

Marketing is reviewed quarterly by Original Video to assess its effectiveness and provide a foundation to future marketing plans.

How To Buy A Restaurant Franchise

restaurant ownerThere are many different types of business format franchises, but when most people think of a franchise business, their first thought is of food.

The success and growth of the many big brand-name fast-food franchises makes this a logical first stop in the thinking process.

When evaluating restaurant franchises, you must focus on the characteristics of the business from a franchisee’s perspective to determine whether this industry is the right one for you.

There are some wonderful advantages to having a food business, but there are also some challenges you need to be aware of before proceeding in this industry.

In assessing a food business, the main advantages are typically considered to be:

  • Built-in Demand. Consumers have been trained to look for franchise food outlets, which can represent a big advantage for a startup. You need to make sure the product offering of the food franchise has “staying power” in the marketplace rather than being a fad or fringe product.
  • Ease in Financing. Traditional lending sources are very familiar with the real estate and equipment needs of a prepared food operation, which may ease the challenge of obtaining startup financing. These sources also like the relatively high revenue production of a typical food franchise.
  • Track Record of Success. Many food franchises have multiple units and have been operating for a while, making it fairly simple to determine and verify their track record of success. That can help you make an informed decision about the business prior to getting involved.
  • Prestige. Whether valid or not, many people associate a high degree of glamour with a person who owns a food franchise business. The fairly high degree of status associated with this occupation is important to many prospective franchisees.

Win Your Very Own Business Competition

home officeA business plan is an essential element in getting funding for a new business. Entrepreneurs show their plans to venture capitalists, angel investors, banks, and even friends and family in the hopes of raising capital. But there’s one source of financing that most entrepreneurs neglect: business plan competitions.

Business plan competitions offer new entrepreneurs the chance to earn fame and startup capital. There are more than 50 business plan competitions in the United States, many of which offer startup capital to the winner.

The best known competition is Moot Corp, started in 1984 at the University of Texas by two MBA students who wanted a challenge similar to moot court in law school.

They envisioned a competition in which MBAs working in teams would conceive an idea for a new business, develop the idea into a written business plan, and present the plan to a panel of judges consisting of entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, accountants, lawyers and management consultants. Moot Corp soon expanded into a national and then international competition.

The contest with one of the biggest prizes is the $100,000 competition sponsored by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Other high-profile schools, including Harvard Business School, Duke University, University of Chicago and Wharton Business School, host competitions open to teams with at least one member that attends their institution.
